Memoirs of a Tusker
"Memoirs of a Tusker" by Sathmi Yomini Witharana is a heartfelt poem told through the eyes of a sacred tusker. It captures his journey from tranquil plains to carrying Sri Lanka’s most revered treasure, reflecting duty, faith, and the timeless honor of tradition under the shelter of the triple gem.

I am born to no religion nor faith
In a mystical island known for its beautiful green plains
The sunsets with the greens was nothing but bliss
But my heart whispered “you are destined for greater things that cannot be missed”
I crossed the border of once a majestic kingdom
The city welcomed me with love and devotion
Sunsets passed and then dawned the chosen day
To perform the role, I was destined to play
Tonight the city shines in its utmost glory
Enchanted chants and prayers echoed in perfect melody
Infused with hope reaching the myriad galaxy
The clock ticked and reminded that it was time
This gentle tug made me reach out to the sky
I told my predecessors I was not ready
That my heart fluttered with my breath unsteady
They murmured to me from their celestial home
This is a sacred trust you must perform
You might feel like a radiant spark they said
But you are just the ephemeral ward of the Lankan sacred treasure chest
As it was time I stood tall with utmost pride
Took every step with a delicate stride
Shouldering the country’s divine treasure was an ultimate honor
With gratitude I held onto it until my final hour
Years got lost in the sands of time
Then dawned the day I closed my eyes for the final time
I woke up to be welcomed to my new abode
To a place so serene somewhere beyond the clouds
I took a glimpse of the place which was once my home
Caught sight of a brother before the gate of the temple door
He looked up to the sky and asked “will I do this well”
I smiled and whispered to his ears
“Don’t worry my friend
Because there you will always be sheltered by the triple gem”
